Sneaky Signs of Codependency

Codependency can be sneaky, and it often shows up in ways that feel caring or selfless – but beneath the surface, it might be messing with your boundaries. Besides the “classic” signs of codependency, like having trouble saying no or neglecting your own wants and needs, there are some others that can indicate it’s time to consider if you have codependent traits. Does this sound like you?

  • You’re that person who will show up for everyone (or maybe just your partner), all the time, for everything. Overextended? Exhausted? Yep! But it’s okay, because someone needs you, right? (Cue internal scream.)
  • You’re so focused on how others feel that you lose touch with your own emotions. It might be hard for you to recognize what you want or how you really feel, making it easy to follow others’ lead.
  • On that note, you’re hyper-aware of others’ moods and may feel anxious trying to manage or soothe them. Someone’s having a bad day… or just acting a little differently than normal? You’re already on the case, trying to fix it, soothe it, or make sure it’s not your fault.
  • You’re the unofficial life coach, therapist, and problem-solver for everyone around you. Got a friend in a crisis? You’re already pulling out the whiteboard to solve their life for them – meanwhile, your own to-do list is gathering dust.

It can be hard to come to terms with codependent tendencies – realizing you’ve been putting others ahead of yourself for so long is a tough pill to swallow. The good news? You don’t have to figure it out alone. Therapy can help you unpack these patterns, set healthier boundaries, and *finally* start putting yourself first without feeling guilty. You’ll learn to spot those sneaky habits, challenge them, and build relationships that are balanced and fulfilling.
